In the spring 0f 2017 Rupaul’s DragCon L.A. had sold over a million tickets and saw record breaking numbers while only just launching in 2015. It was only a matter of time before DragCon made their way to New York City and when they did Style Crave had to be there. The two day event sold over 40,000 tickets and was sold out days before the doors even open at the Javits Center on Sept 9th. Spearheaded by RuPaul and World of Wonder Productions, RuPaul’s DragCon provides a platform for fans – of all ages and backgrounds – to meet and interact with world-renowned celebrities and icons in a creative, friendly and accessible environment. “At RuPaul’s DragCon, we celebrate all the colors of the rainbow,” exclaims RuPaul. “We have an orange president that wraps himself in red, white and blue. How are you going to make America great again if you can’t love all the colors of the rainbow?“Makeup Social Media Influencers like Sophie and Lucy Garland traveled all the way from Melbourne, Australia to meet fans at the Marc Jacobs Beauty booth. Infamous Youtubers Manny MUA and Jeffree Star also made appearances during the two day event.
Wether you go to DragCon to shop the booths, meet the queens, experience the energy or just people watch there is so much to experience. It makes sense as to why Drag Con is a two day event because in the few hours we were there we could barely soak in half of the convention floor. Drag superstars like Naomi Smalls, Bible Girl, Trixie Mattell, and Rupaul’s Drag Race season 9 winner Sasha Velour drew in meet and greet lines that queued around three hours to snap a picture.
“The expressions of love, family and imagination that flooded the Convention Center this past weekend made RuPaul’s DragCon the happiest and most fabulous place on earth,” says Randy Barbato, World of Wonder co-founder. The energy at DragCon is free acceptance. Come as you are or how you want to be, no judgement. It felt like I was hanging out with 50,000 of my closest friends all in one place at one time and we were all the cool kids when in reality most of us we’re outcasts growing up.
Brands like Sugar Pill Cosmetics, Manic Panic and Marc Jacobs Beauty came out to support the DragCon initiative with elaborate booths and even sponsored some of the queens in attendance. Having an event like DragCon in NYC is especially significant given the history of Gay Pride. “We’re excited to bring DragCon to NYC where our queens will prance proudly in the city of Stonewall, under the watchful eye of the fiercest queen of all – Lady Liberty,” Says World of Wonder co-founder Fenton Bailey.
DragCon isn’t just a home for Rupaul’s Drag Race superfans, guests have the opportunity to mix and mingle with queens, make up artists and artisans from all over the world who share the passion for the art of drag. You never know what connections and friends you can make just by showing up to a convention like DragCon.
